★★★★★ Busou Shoujo Machiavellianism [Review]

A bloody battle school harem featuring freedom-loving guy transferring into an all-girls school where man-haters armed with police batons and even actual swords "correct" the male delinquents into... crossdressers? Also he needs to collect five seals from the top five swords to be allowed to leave school grounds.

It's like Prison School, but less about female anatomy and more about the girls and sword-fighting styles.

Onigawara Rin slashing Nomura Fudou's necktie with a sword.

12 episode arc-conclusive partial adaptation of a manga.

10/10★ - A refreshing take on a detestable genre.
Strengths: the main character, the girls, the fights, the pacing, well, everything.

Full of curious surprises: a competent MC, blades that actually draw blood, characters with very thick traits, a mysterious plot. A great mix of action, comedy and sad backstories.

What do people want in a battle school harem? Is it the battles that are actual fights and people actually end up in the infirmary? It's got it. Is it the weird school with its weird rules? It's got it. Is it a harem so varied it makes you think the MC has been blessed by Zeus himself? It's definitely got it.

Nevermind all girls loving the guy, this is an anime where all girls hate guys. Period. It's completely insane in its plot. And gives the MC a ridiculous quest: get a seal of approval from the five strongest students so he can freedom-ly set foot outside school without being expelled and without having to "behave." Those top five are, by far, the craziest ones.

So here you have a monster-of-the-week where the monster is a high-school girl wielding a katana, and the protagonist that fights swords bare-handed. This unfairness results in pure badassery mixed with your usual lighthearted school anime.

Details

This is a battle school harem anime at its finest. The setup seems pretty obvious at first: MC fights girl, girl ends up liking MC. You can then surmise the best part of the anime is the uniqueness of each girl; how she fights, her personality, etc. Most non-fighting scenes are a bit of comedy. The backstories of the characters are rather dramatic.

Note: it features a few Japanese puns through the series. Mainly of words of different meanings that are all pronounced kyousei (a.k.a. homophones.) For example: coexistence (of girls with guys, kyousei 共生), correction (of delinquents, kyousei 矯正), coercion (kyousei 強制), and, though not an homophone, castration (kyosei 去勢).

The gender-ratio is literally one guy, an all-girls school, and a bunch of crossdressers. (yes, really.) Since it's a harem, it's hard to call any part of it a romance. Although it's not ecchi, it does feature a lot of perverted scenes for a shounen anime, including naked bath scenes with "hair-bra" and so on.

There's some violence in this anime. A lot of blood from slicing wounds. Wow, that's... that's a lot of blood. It's enough blood to make you wonder if someone's actually gonna die or something. There's no gore, one torture scene that's not very graphic, a bunch of girls getting punched around, and one bitch-slap so glorious it's even worth writing about it here.

The feels-filled period melodrama of an emotionless ex-child-soldier amputee girl trying to understand the meaning of love. A Jormungand  that doesn't deal with arms but with feelings, or a single-player Mahoutsukai no Yome . 13 episode conclusive light novel adaptation. Plus one OVA, set somewhere in the middle of the 13 episodes. 10/10★ - It made me feel human. Strengths: character development, extraordinarily detailed, excellent scene-writing, artwork and soundtrack. Weakness: a few child vs. soldiers battles feel ridiculous; can be off-putting, but not the focus of the anime and mainly used as a plot device. A heart-wrenching no-emotions PTSD child story that stands out for its dedication to character instead of world or plot; brings out every slight emotional change with mesmerizing attention to detail. Many anime deal with sad traumatized child victims you'd want to protect, but often fail to make you attached to them, distracting you with other stuff inst

★★★★☆ Houseki no Kuni [Review]

The mystical story of Phosphophyllite, a genderless gem-person, aloof and weak, that breaks apart easily, but nevertheless immortal; the pieces can be glued back. Living in an island together with other gems and their sensei , constantly battling against the "moon people" who want to take their precious gem-flesh back to the moon. It has an air of Shinsekai Yori . 12 episode partial adaptation of a manga. 9/10★ - Intriguing, beautiful, and sometimes stunningly horrifying. Strengths: characters development, characterization, excellent use of 3D. It's different from other anime at a fundamental level: the characters don't bleed, they shatter. With that as starting point, it develops into a wondrous melancholy. You know they can't die, but you can't help but feel apprehensive, specially for the useless main character that set out to be useful. This series is a perfect fit for its 3D. Characters don't just have a same face, they have a same body.

★★★★☆ Aho-Girl [Review]

An absolute idiot, high-tension high-school girl, pesters everyone with her boundless stupidity, specially the guy she likes: A-kun, an A+ student osananajimi who's grown real sick of her annoyance but can't get rid of her. Stupid like Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu , fast like Saiki Kusuo no Psi-Nan . 12 episodes of 12 minutes, slice adaptation of a 4-koma manga. 9/10★ - Hilariously detestable idiot character. Strengths: misunderstanding even the most basic concepts of life, A-kun total lack of empathy to what he considers an animal instead of a girl. Weaknesses: pervyness, panty shots and groping. Constant laughter; the short episodes of 4-koma go through jokes instantly. Yoshiko's total lack of intelligence will make you lose faith in humanity. Here we have a character so unbelievably dumb that comparing her to monkey is offensive to the monkey. Every time you'll feel surprised to discover a new and unexpected way in which Yoshiko lacks brains. Whatever y

An epic mecha adventure of an orphan boy living in a poor underground village who has never seen the surface and his trusty gutsy katana-gang-bro; one day a huge mecha-with-face destroys the cave ceiling whilst fighting a sniper-gun-girl, they find a smaller mecha-with-face, and the non-stop series of mecha battles begin. It's  Kill la Kill , but with mechas instead of almost-naked girls. 27 episode conclusive anime original. Warning: the two movies are summaries with the pacing destroyed, avoid them at all cost, they add very little to the TV anime and spoil the whole story. 10/10★ - The most shounen anime ever. Strengths: blows every expectation out of the water. Great character development. At one point, combines eyegasm with eargasm for what's to be known as the legendary audiovisualgasm. It'll give you a chill in the spine from pure euphoria and awe to its otherworldly levels of epic... in the first episode. And that's gonna happen in dozens of episo
